Students for Life Ireland, a pro-life student group, have described as “heartbreaking” the recent reports from Argentina regarding the first known death of a woman, from abortion, since abortion was legalised there four months ago.

Spokesperson for the group, Alexandria Nestor, said: “The details emerging from Argentina in the past few days are stark and heartbreaking. A 23-year-old woman, Maria De Valle Gonzalez Lopez, went for an abortion in the town of La Paz in the Mendoza Province of Argentina and tragically did not survive the procedure.”

Alexandria continued: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Maria and her unborn baby at this time. Much and all as we would have disagreed with the opinions Maria espoused as a well-known and leading campaigner for abortion in Argentina, we are desperately sorry that this tragedy occurred. We are also saddened though that even following on from this latest tragedy, abortion advocates are continuing to shout the mantra that abortion is “safe and rare.” The truth is that across the world countless women have died as a direct result of legal abortion, along with the untold number of unborn babies. This shocking reality must be addressed and not dismissed for purely ideological reasons.

“As pro-life campaigners, we believe that every human life is worth protecting and cherishing. Abortion hurts women and sometimes even takes their lives. It is also a regressive, ageist and discriminatory response to an unplanned pregnancy. Women and their unborn babies deserve better.”

“In expressing sorrow on the death of Maria, we pledge to continue to fight for a world where all lives born and unborn are welcomed in life and protected in law”, concluded Alexandria.
