Students for Life Ireland, a pro-life student group, has expressed “deep concern” over reports in the media that a TD was called an “eejit” after she disclosed her unexpected pregnancy to her political party.
Spokesperson for the group, Siobhán O’Shaughnessy, said: “We are extremely concerned about media reports in the past week that a female TD was left feeling alone and isolated when she announced to colleagues that she was pregnant. Nobody in any walk of life should feel afraid or ashamed to disclose their pregnancy to their employer or organisation.”
“If anyone discloses to their peers, employer or in this case their political party, that they are experiencing an unexpected pregnancy, such news should be met with nothing other than congratulations, love and support. To make fun of someone for getting pregnant is an extremely unsupportive and inappropriate thing to do. Attitudes to pregnancy and in particular unexpected pregnancy in this country need to change – especially within political circles and this is something we in Students for Life Ireland will continue to highlight”, concluded Ms O’Shaughnessy.
